Preventive dentistry is the practice of caring for one’s teeth to keep them healthy. Dr. Robert J. Mohn believes this helps to avoid cavities, gum disease, enamel wear, and more. There are many forms of preventive dentistry, such as daily brushing, semi-annual oral exams, x-rays and dental cleanings, sealants and nightguards. These practices are designed to ensure that teeth are clean, strong, and white. Children should be taught proper oral hygiene at an early age.
The most important part of preventive dentistry is to brush teeth daily with fluoride toothpaste approved by the American Dental Association (ADA). It is recommended that most people replace their toothbrushes three to four times a year or as the bristles start to fray. Daily flossing is also highly recommended. Flossing helps to clean out the tight spaces between the teeth. Semi-annual dental cleanings and oral exams allow dentists to identify problems and take care of them right away. People should schedule dental appointments at least twice a year for an exam to check for any problems in the teeth or gums. Eating a well-balanced diet also helps to protect the teeth by providing them with the essential nutrients needed.
ORAL EXAMS AND DIGITAL X-RAYS
Oral exams and dental x-rays can be essential to catching potential issues at an early stage. During an oral exam, our team will evaluate the health of your teeth and gums, which includes a thorough inspection for any cavities, decay, or other issues that may be present. Should we detect any irregularities, we will recommend a treatment plan based on your specific needs in order to restore your teeth and gums to healthy form. We typically advise that oral exams and/or x-rays be received about once every six months to help ensure no issues are left undetected and untreated.
Dental cleanings are an essential part of keeping your smile healthy and bright. Following an oral exam, one of our skilled hygienists will typically perform a thorough dental cleaning by utilizing an advanced technique designed to clean your teeth more efficiently and effectively. This innovative cleaning technique utilizes less heat and water than alternative methods, and it has also been known to produce less sensitivity for your teeth and gums while providing a more comprehensive cleaning. Treatment times will vary depending on your specific needs, but dental cleanings at our office can typically be completed in as little as 30 minutes with this state-of-the-art technique.
At our practice, we offer effective teeth sealant treatments to help you and your children prevent cavities and tooth decay. This durable plastic material helps block and protect against bacteria that sits in the small spaces within the teeth. Our team of dentists recommends dental sealants as an early preventative dental procedure to help keep teeth healthy and bright.
Nightguards protect our teeth from nighttime clenching or grinding (bruxism). When orthodontic treatments or reconstruction of the mouth are not treatments that are feasible, a nightguard is an economical and easy way to protect the teeth during the night. They can last for many years and are precision fit to be comfortable and to not damage your existing teeth. Oftentimes, the store bought nightguards can be uncomfortable and may actually shift the teeth with long-term use, necessitating orthodontics and additional dentistry. So, if you want to use a store brand nightguard, please check with Dr. Mohn to make sure it won’t cause any future harm.
